Leon Aschil was born on November 10, 1875, in Adrianople (present-day Edirne) and grew up in Odessa. After completing his vocal studies in Vienna and spending time in Zurich and Mannheim, he moved to Stuttgart, where he joined the choir of the Stuttgart Opera as a bass in 1905. He also sang with the Stuttgart synagogal choir and at festivals with the Jewish association Esras Achim, where his colleague Max Heinemann also performed. Aschil was forced into retirement in May of 1933 because of his Jewish background. He remained in Stuttgart and was able to avoid deportation due to his marriage to a non-Jewish woman. Leon Aschil died on January 20, 1954, in Stuttgart.
