The technical staff of the Hessian Landestheater Darmstadt was systematically purged of all individuals regarded as hostile. On June 12, 1933, the theater’s employees summarily received termination notices, effective July 31, 1933. No reasons were provided. In the weeks that followed, their political and family backgrounds were reviewed by a partisan “Purification Committee”. Those classified as Jewish or politically undesirable were not rehired.
Born on March 15, 1904, in Pfungstadt, Georg Schüssler worked as a stagehand at the Hessian Landestheater Darmstadt. He was dismissed from his position in July of 1933 because of his membership in the Socialist Workers’ Youth and the Iron Front. He was only able to find work again in 1936, at the Fieseler Werke. In 1947, Schüssler was rehired by the theater as a stagehand. He died in 1971 in Darmstadt.
