Born on September 13, 1874, in Budapest, Ferdinand Heltai worked as an actor after attending the Hungarian Academy of Drama. In 1904, he moved to Germany and served as the director of smaller private theaters in Hamburg, Breslau (present-day Wrocław), Cologne, and Berlin. In September of 1931, General Director Heinz Tietjen appointed him as an “artistic and administrative adviser” at the Städtische Oper in Berlin and placed him in charge of the press office of the General Directorate of the Prussian State Theaters. As a Jew and a member of the Social Democratic Party, he was dismissed in June of 1933, despite having a valid contract through August of 1934. The artist returned to his hometown of Budapest and attempted to establish a branch office there for a German publishing house. Ferdinand Heltai died in 1937 in Budapest.
